Some Joint Services ranks in Bartica have been accused of beating a 21-year-old youth on Tuesday night, as he was standing in front of his business establishment.
The youth, who has been identified as Clydon Dowden, suffered a broken nose and ruptured lips. His face is also said to be swollen.
The youth’s sister, Cindy Robertson, is claiming that her brother did nothing wrong and she cannot understand why the ranks would want to harm him.
She explained that at around 20:20hrs on Tuesday her brother, who is a cell phone technician, was standing in front of his business place in Bartica and was in the process of calling his mother from his cell phone.
Robertson said that because her brother has blurred vision, he had to hold the cell phone close up to his face, so that he could see the correct telephone number for his mother.
At the same time, a police patrol was passing and thought that the youth was taking a photograph of them.
According to her, one of the police officers jumped out of the vehicle and ran towards her brother, asking him, “Why you tekking out my picture?”
Instead of checking the cell phone for the picture, Robertson told this newspaper that the police officer dealt her brother several slaps on the face and butted him on his nose.
She added that her brother was then thrown in the back of the pick up and was driven around the community.
After the beating, the police officer then decided to check the cell phone for the picture and then it was verified that the youth did not take any photograph of the officers.
Upon realizing what they did, Robertson said that the policeman then dropped off her brother at his business place and told him that they will let him go with a warning.
Robertson said that she is still trying to understand what kind of warning the police have issued to her brother.
The 21-year-old boy was taken to the Bartica Hospital, where he was treated and sent away. Robertson said when she questioned the police as to why her brother had to be beaten for something he didn’t do, she was told by the officers that with the increased crime in the country, they did not want to take chances of people capturing their picture.
She noted that she eventually made a report of the beating at the Bartica Police Station the same evening and the officers there tried to convince her to settle the matter.
According to Robertson, the police officer begged her to accept an apology, but she refused.
After realizing her reluctance to settle the matter, the police at the station then took a statement from her brother. They then told her that the matter would be investigated.
However, Kaieteur News understands that the police sent for the youth again yesterday and took another statement from him.
Yesterday, a senior officer at the police station said that there have been reports of the incident and that an investigation has been mounted.
