– now subject of manhunt
Quick action by residents of Wakenaam saved what could have been the worse disasters on the island in recent times.
Shortly after 07:30 hours yesterday a man who had a dispute with his reputed wife set the house ablaze.
According to information received, the man was living with the woman and her children in the bottom flat of a two-storey building. For some time now the couple had been experiencing domestic problems.
Things came to a head on Tuesday night when the man reportedly took the woman to a lonely road and beat her.
The woman reportedly sought refuge in a neighbour’s house and later fled the island. Yesterday morning, the man began a frantic search for the woman in the neighbourhood, threatening, and in one case assaulting neighbours. It was alleged that he was armed with a cutlass.
The man later went home where he reportedly destroyed a 20-inch television set with a cutlass and then set the place alight using clothing.
The scared neighbours remained indoors and only emerged when the fire began to send billowing smoke. That was when they became aware of the fire.
Word quickly spread to Rahaman’s Sawmill which had just begun its operations. The mill was immediately stopped on realizing there was a fire and several employees rushed to the scene.
The workers along with other residents formed a bucket brigade, using water and mud from a nearby drain to put out the blaze that was beginning to threaten a nearby house.
Police arrived while the suspect was still at the scene but the man challenged the officers to shoot him. He calmly walked through the yard of the burning house and made good his escape.
During the day ranks from the CID on the Essequibo Coast visited the scene and conducted investigations.
The children are now with a relative at an undisclosed address. Relatives have been giving the children clothing since all their earthly possessions have been destroyed.
The police have since launched a search for the suspect whom they believe is hiding in the area.
Wakenaam does not have any fire fighting equipment and whenever there is a fire, bucket brigades are the norm to save property.
The house in question was recently advertised for sale by a city bank.
