A 15-year-old former student of the Wisburg Secondary School is the latest victim of one of the popular, but treacherous lakes in Linden.
Kedar Alley, also known as Kedar Hamid, of 14 Second Alley, Wismar, Linden, was found floating in Salt Lake in Christianburg, shortly after a search party was sent out to look for him. According to his father, Alwyn Harlequin, the boy had left home on Monday.
A distraught Harlequin, who said that Kedar was his only son, related that the boy had left their home at around midday on Monday to hang out with some of his friends.
“I went across the river at about the same time that Kedar left home but when I returned home he had not yet come back; so I enquired of his whereabouts from one of his friends who I saw at a nearby shop.
“The boy said that he last saw Kedar in the company of two girls on Monday afternoon.”
The other boys were reportedly in the bush picking some fruit.
Subsequently, after Kedar failed to return home on Monday night, his father decided to report the matter to the Wismar Police Station yesterday morning.
At the same time, a search party was sent out to look for the boy in the area around Salt Water Lake, after it was learnt that Kedar had indicated to some friends that he wanted to go swimming.
That search uncovered the young man’s slippers in the vicinity of Salt Water Lake. This caused a second search party to be sent out.
According to Harlequin, Kedar’s body was subsequently recovered from the lake. He was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where his death was confirmed.
Harlequin has issued a strong warning to adventurous youths who often use the holidays to go swimming in the numerous water ways in Linden.
Many of these adventures have sadly resulted in the deaths of quite a few young people. (Enid Joaquin)
