However, this newspaper understands that a police mobile patrol operating in the area observed three men acting in a suspicious manner near the Lama Canal, popularly called the ‘Blacka’.
This newspaper was told that as the police approached, the men opened fire and the police responded.
At the time the police were almost certain that they had hit at least one of the men.
When this newspaper arrived on the scene a police officer who appeared to be in command was overheard relaying on his mobile phone that ‘mission accomplished, main man down’.
However, after hours of waiting, the ranks who had pursued the suspect into the cane fields did not emerge with anyone.
Residents from as far as Festival City and Sophia were startled by the barrage of gunshots that rang out.
“All we hear is rat-a-tat-tat and then single shots then rat-a-tat again,” one resident told this newspaper.
Efforts to ascertain what really happened from the police proved futile.
