West Indies under-15 opener Kraigg Braithwaite has looked rock solid for Barbados in his unbeaten 34 at the end of a rain affected first day of their third round TCL Group three-day regional under-19 cricket match at the BET ground yesterday.
When rain sent the players scurrying off the field for the final time at 16:47hrs, host Barbados were 96-2 off 27.1 overs with Roston Chase the other not out batsman with 21.
Barbados were off to a poor start after Royan Fredericks, in his first game as Guyana Skipper had won the toss and elected to field in cloudy conditions when play finally began at 12:30hrs due to overnight and morning rain.
The in-form Rashidi Boucher, who made 22 and 73 when these teams last met at this level last year, was beaten for pace as he missed a pull at 16-year-old pacer Keon Joseph and his middle stump was sent cart-wheeling in the day’s second over. He made one.
Skipper Kyle Corbin, who along with Boucher are the surviving members of last year’s three-day team, joined the super-cool 15-year-old Kraigg Braithwaite at 1-1 and the pair took the host to 50 in 10.5 overs with a composed partnership on a rough and heavy outfield.
Corbin, a West Indies under-19 player, stroked fast bowler Leon Scott through mid-off for four and then pulled him for a six two overs later to bring the handful of spectators to life.
Braithwaite, who had a prolific run with the bat for the West Indies in this year’s Clico International under-15 tournament in the Caribbean, looked very organised and by Tea was unbeaten on 34 from 81 balls and 105 minutes with three boundaries.
Dilon Heyliger, making his debut in place of his injured skipper Eugene LaFleur who sprained his ankle while warming-up before the start of play, was greeted with a delightful straight drive by Corbin in his first over as Barbados, with two outright defeats in their last three matches at this level against Guyana, reached 53 before Corbin departed.
The right-hander who hit two fours and a six in his cameo 39-ball 34, lofted off-spinner Herman Latcha high to cover and Barbados were 53-2.
Chase joined Braithwaite and the pair pushed the Bajans to 87-2 although Chase had difficulty reading Bishun’s ‘wrong one’ on a slow track before rain stopped play half an hour before the scheduled 14:40hrs tea interval.
After a delay of 32 minutes play resumed and the tea break was extended to 15:10hrs.
Braithwaite batted in ‘Chanderpaul fashion’ and was quick to put away the bad balls while working the good ones into gaps as Bishun and Latcha operated in tandem to keep the brakes on the scoring in very overcast conditions.
After four balls were bowled another shower at 14:47hrs stopped play and Tea was taken at that time with Barbados on 96-2.
Even though the rain stopped, the wet conditions of the ground forced the umpires to call off proceedings for the day at 16:57hrs.
Manager of the Guyana team Alvin Johnson said LaFleur’s unavailability was a blow to the team but added that his absence should provide the other players with the motivation to work even harder for the team.
”He (La Fleur) was uncomfortable and in the interest of his further participation in the tournament the management team decided that he be rested for the match,” Johnson explained.
The manager also provided an update on the two other players in the team who are carrying injuries in Jeetendra Sookdeo (side strain) and Leon Scott (back strain).
“Sookdeo continues to receive therapy and will return tomorrow (Tuesday) morning for another session while the results of Scott’s X-ray is to be forwarded by Dr Harper to the Physiotherapy department of for evaluation,” Johnson said.
Coach Hubern Evans is aiming to dismiss the host for less than 200 to take first innings points.
“We were looking for a full day’s play to dismiss Barbados but there is nothing we can do about God’s work. We hope to bowl them out tomorrow (today) below 200 and I am pleased that we have removed both of their West Indies batsmen. LaFleur’s absence has affected the balance of the team and we hope to have him back for the next game but I am confident in Frederick’s ability to carry the ship in this game,” Evans said.
“I do not feel there is enough time for an outright win since there is more rain forecast for tomorrow (today) and we are now concentrating on getting first innings points to increase our lead. If we can win this game we should be well on course to retaining the title,” Evans added.
Play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs today since the regulations of this competition does not allow lost time to be carried over to the next day.
