– children, pregnant women to benefit
The Ministry of Health has been tasked with preparing a new three-year programme geared at addressing the nutritional needs of pregnant women and young children.
This disclosure was made recently by Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy, who provided media operatives with an update of an ongoing nutrition programme which is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.
According to the Minister, through that programme pregnant women and children between the ages of six and 24 months are provided with micro-nutrient sprinkles.
He pointed out that the specific age group of the young children is targeted for the nutritional assistance since that stage is considered the transition period from breast milk to real foods.
The programme also provides mothers with children of the target age group with vouchers worth about $1,000, the Minister informed.
He noted that efforts are not only being made to recommend the requisite diet for the children but also to provide tangible assistance to ensure that a proper diet for them becomes a reality.
The Nutritional Programme commenced in 2003 and according to the Minister, it should have ended in 2007. However, measures were engaged and the programme was extended to December this year.
In addition he disclosed that Government has given its assurance to contribute over $200M to the programme which will see it being further extended to June next year.
In the meantime, Minister Ramsammy said that Government has mandated the Ministry of Health to prepare a new three-year programme so that the programme can be sustained in order to address the micro-nutrient needs of children and pregnant women in Guyana.
As such the Minister said that the Ministry is extremely grateful that the government has allowed the continuance of the programme.
According to him it has been quite successful in that it has served to significantly reduce the rate of anaemia in pregnant women and children.
It was for this reason, Minister Ramsammy said, the programme is now being viewed as an imperative to continue providing support for proper nutrition among the target group.
