Kwakwani, LTI renew rivalry in Pepsi Schools’ final
– easily gets rid of opposition in semi–final

Some things just don’t change! The Pepsi National Schools’ Basketball title will remain in Region 10 for the second consecutive year after Kwakwani Secondary and Linden’s Technical Institute (LTI) easily reached today’s final.
The week–long competition will culminate today when Region 10’s schools’ basketball titans renew last year’s rivalry at the locally renowned Mecca of local basketball: the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall at 5:00pm.
Last evening, Kwakwani Secondary imposed their will as the reigning champions when they dismissed any challenge from President’s College (PC) in the first semi–final while LTI ensured that they spark revenge in the second semi–final.
Kwakwani displaced President’s College 57–34 and LTI trashed Christianburg/Wismar Multilateral 55–35 to guarantee a rematch of last year’s final. Both teams profoundly declared that they were the best in the preliminary round.
Guard Shelroy Thomas was again on point on the offensive end for Kwakwani with 14 points while support came from Leron LaFluer’s 10 points. Richard Mohandatt had 15 points for PC while Willem Cameron finished with 11 points.
In the feature game, LTI took advantage of a good offensive start and the promise of centre Travis Leitch, who literally dominated the defensive board, which made scoring easy for the lanky technical student.
At the half, LTI were ahead unassailably on 28–9 but Multi’s early offensive run in the second half triggered a dim glimmer of hope for the team. In the first five minutes of the new half, the scores were 32–17 in favor of LTI.
Shaun Allicock drilled a three–point jumper to extend LTI’s score to 35 but Mutli kept coming and with five minutes to play, LTI were ahead 49–32, which translated into their offensive reservation in the closing minutes.
At the end of the game, Leitch had 16 points while Donnel Benjamin scored 15 points to help them secure the final placing. The team’s leading scorer, Orin Rose was restricted to eight points despite his obvious energy on offence.
Multilateral’s Stravin Ettienne scored 20 out of the school’s total 35 points. The final of the 2008 Pepsi Schools’ tournament will bounce off today with a third place game between Multi and PC at 5:00pm before the big game.
