National Race Walk Champion, Rudolph Mitchell of Linden won the Ryan Rahaman’s Trophy and his 76th consecutive local title after winning the five mile Caricom Day 2008 Race Walk on Monday last was sponsored by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club in association with the Green Path Foundation.
The Race started at Guysuco L.B.I. Estate Road and proceeded along the Railway Embankment ending at the Caricom Headquarters Lilliendaal.
In cool conditions with a few brief showers, Mitchell led a field of about 50 participants, featuring mainly a large contingent from the Guyana Fire Service, to beat O’Neil Joseph in the second place with Alumah Roberts of the Guyana Fire Services in the third position.
In the female category Donna Ramkissoon placed first with June Joseph and Odessa Singh in the second and third positions respectively.
Maurice Fagundes once again copped the first position in the veterans division ahead of Debidyal Harold and S. Rahaman of New Amsterdam in the second and third spots.
Trophies and other prizes were donated by the National Sports Commission, Toucan Industries Ltd, John Nedd and Son, Ryan Rahaman, Duncan Clarke and Clayton Hinds. The Caricom Secretariat presented an information package to all participants.
Mr. Charles Griffith, President of The Green Path Foundation presented the prizes to the winners and urged more Guyanese of all ages to become involved in this healthy Olympic Sport.
Meanwhile the C.S.T.C. will stage a Pre-Carifesta 20 laps race walk around the National Park on Sunday July 20.
The race commences at 06.30 hrs and trophies and other incentives are up for grabs in the categories Male and Female (seniors), juniors and Veterans. Interested participants must be at the starting line at 6:00am.
