Defending Caribbean champions Alexander Arjoon, Ashley Khalil and Victoria Arjoon are among a strong squad that departed Guyana yesterday morning for the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Bermuda.
The Guyana Squash Association named 14 players including seven boys and an equal amount of girls to attend the championships which last from July 9-20.
Those selected are:
Girls-Victoria Arjoon, Ashley DeGroot, Mary Fung-A-Fat, Ashley Khalil, Keisha Jeffrey, Kayla Jeffrey and Daina King.
Boys- Nyron Joseph, Jean-Claude Jeffrey, Jason Ray Khalil, Deje Dias, Alexander Arjoon, Oliver Downes and Raphael DeGroot.
Guyana is the defending girls champions and is the overwhelming favourites to repeat as team champions with Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Ashley Khalil ranked number one in the under 13, 15 and 17 categories respectively.
The Jeffrey twins, Keisha and Kayla are also expected to be seeded in the top three in the under-17 category.
On the boys’ side, it is expected that Alexander Arjoon will be named the top seed in the under-17 category, while Nyron Joseph, Jean-Claude Jeffrey, Jason Ray Khalil and Oliver Downes should all be among the top four seeds in their respective categories.
The team will be hoping to improve on last year’s outstanding performance where they won four out of eight individual titles and went on to win the girls’ team title for the fourth time in six years.
Guyana also won the overall team title and boasts an impressive record of fifteen team titles, which is six more than the rest of the Caribbean combined.
Alexander Arjoon, who won the Under-15 crown will not be defending that title since he has moved up to the U-17 category and this is the same with Ashley Khalil, who will have to campaign in the U-17 division.
Victoria Arjoon, the defending U-13 champion will have another chance to preserve her title, while another U-13 titlist Abhishek Singh will not attend the championships.
The Coach is Carl Ince, while Robert Fernandes and Denise Jeffrey will serve as Managers.
