Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has given the go ahead for the Guyana Elections Commission to commence the registration of prisoners in all the country’s penal institutions.
Yesterday the Minister confirmed that he had been approached by GECOM to conduct the exercise.
The exercise will see close to 2000 inmates being added to the list of registrants of the Guyana Elections Commission.
This is not the first time that prisoners will be registered in Guyana, although they are not eligible to vote once they are incarcerated at the time of any elections.
House to house registration ended last week but there is still some fine tuning to be done to come up with an accurate voters’ list.
