Guyana’s Oslyn Collins placed seventh in Heat 5 of the women’s 400m yesterday when the 12th International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships got underway in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Collins’ time of 1:01.20 was good enough for the last place in a race that was won in 53.82 seconds. Australia’s Angeline Blackburn returned that winning time, which was also her best time in the event.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Britany St. Louis was second in 54.67 seconds while Russia’s Liliya Gafiyatullina finished third in 54.95 seconds. The sixth place time was 57.12 seconds, just over four seconds ahead of Collins.
The fastest four in each heat advances to the next round. Obviously Collins, as predicted, will not have that honour. There has been much debate on whether the athlete should have gone to the meet ahead of Alika Morgan.
However, the Athletics Association of Guyana, who submitted Collins name to the IAAF to have Guyana represented at the meet has remained tight lipped over what the Guyana Olympic Association has called a blunder.
