The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela yesterday celebrated its 197th anniversary, and to commemorate the occasion, the embassy organised a wreath-laying ceremony and a mass.
The event was held at the bust of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, located at the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation, yesterday morning.
Among those present at the event were Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana, Dario Morandy, members of the Venezuelan Embassy and Venezuelans residing in Guyana.
A wreath was laid before a monument of liberator Simon Bolivar by Ambassador Morandy and a member of the Venezuelan military attached to the embassy.
Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios Blanco, or more commonly Simón Bolívar, was one of the most important leaders of Spanish America’s successful struggle for independence from Spain, along with Argentinian general José de San Martín.
After the triumph over the Spanish monarchy, Bolívar participated in the foundation of Gran Colombia, a nation formed from the liberated Spanish colonies. His legacy contributed decisively to the independence of present-day Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panamá, Perú and Venezuela.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Morandy gave a brief history on how Venezuela gained its independence, and noted that neither Venezuela nor Guyana will ever be a colony to any country again.
The Venezuelan War of Independence was a war fought for the emancipation of what is today Venezuela, between 1811 and 1823. It was part of a series of emancipation movements in South America known as the South American wars of independence.
After the French Emperor Napoleon’s invasion of Spain and the power vacuum that was created in the Spanish possessions in America, a congress of the Criollos, influenced by ideas from the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution, having previously overthrown the Spanish Governor Vicente Emparán on April 19, 1810, declared on July 5, 1811 Venezuela’s independence.
