In what seems to be a response to the ever increasing cost-of-living, there are a number of entities that are trying to cushion the effects for their workers. BOSAI mining company in Linden proposes to give its employees a $3,000 allowance for electricity.
This move comes in the wake of a proposed increase in electricity tariffs come August. This had sparked a massive protest some two weeks back in the mining town.
In the meantime, as residents gear for the proposed increase, BOSAI mining company, during a recent meeting with the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), agreed on an electricity allowance for the employees.
The present electricity rate in Linden stands at $5 per kilowatt hour for residential areas. The proposed increase will provide residential areas with 100 kilowatt hours of electricity at $5 per kilowatt hour, and after the 100 kilowatt hours have been used, residents will pay standard Guyana Power and Light (GPL) rates.
In a recent interview with this newspaper, NAACIE’s General Secretary, Kenneth Joseph, said that the union welcomes the proposal. He added that this proposal will further complement the union’s efforts to cushion the effect of the rising cost of food prices and cost of living.
Joseph said that, so far, both parties have signed a gentleman’s agreement, but the union is awaiting a draft of the agreement.
Only recently, NAACIE and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) met with President Bharrat Jagdeo to discuss a number of measures to address the issue.
