The United States of America has informed the Ministry of Home Affairs of Guyana that, due to logistical and resource limitations, it is not able to fulfill the Government of Guyana’s request at this time to dispatch a forensic/pathology team to Guyana to assist with the investigations into the death of the eight miners at Lindo Creek.
The Government had made a formal request to the Americans for forensic help in determining the killing of the miners, whose burnt remains were found at the camp site.
These remains have since been flown to the city.
But even before the reply from the Americans, there was some concern that the site had been contaminated. The local authorities had removed shells from the site after troops had traversed the area. Further contamination occurred when the authorities removed the remains.
The weather did not help. The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement last night, said that it has already activated contingency arrangements at the bilateral level within CARICOM, together with other regional and international bodies to have a forensic/pathology team present in Guyana.
It is expected that these contingency arrangements will bear fruit shortly.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs appreciates the efforts by other stakeholders to expedite the arrival in Guyana of a competent scientific team to assist with investigations into the death of the eight miners at Lindo Creek.
“The Ministry wishes to reassure that the Administration shares the concern of others in an equally emphatic manner and is exerting every effort to fulfill its responsibilities speedily in this matter, as it has always done in the past,” the release stated.
