Police have detained the owner of a taxi service in Plaisance in connection with the escape of multiple murder suspect Jermaine Charles, called ‘Skinny.’
An official told Kaieteur News that the 53-year-old businessman was arrested yesterday after investigators received information that he had transported ‘Skinny’ from the Sparendaam Police Station, where the murder accused made his dramatic escape last week Wednesday.
However, the man’s relatives are adamant that he had nothing to do with the incident.
A daughter of the businessman told Kaieteur News that Police ranks arrived at the family home at around 13:00 hrs and informed him that he was wanted at the Sparendaam Police Station.
She said that her mother visited the station and it was then that she was told that her husband was being detained in connection with ‘Skinny’s’ escape.
The businessman was subsequently taken to the Cove-and-John Police Station, where he was detained.
According to the man’s daughter, her father is diabetic and also suffers from hypertension.
Charles, who has been charged for several murders, including the killing of five Kaieteur News pressmen, escaped from the Sparendaam Police Station lockups two Wednesdays ago.
Reports indicate that he escaped through a hole in the lockups floor.
The female station sergeant who was on duty at the time has since been transferred.
