Contractor dies after son delivers blow to head

A 20-year-old man is likely to be charged for the murder of his father, who died on Thursday after being beaten at his Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara home.
Sonalall Rooplall, a 48-year-old carpenter/contactor, was allegedly beaten last Sunday by his son, Nandalall Rooplall.
According to reports, the victim and other relatives were at home when the suspect arrived.
An argument ensued between the two men, during which the son allegedly struck his father on the head with a piece of wood.
Relatives say that the injured contractor collapsed. The son then pounced on him and dealt him some blows to his body.
The injured man was treated at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but was not admitted.
However, he was again taken to the hospital after once more collapsing at his home. This time, he was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Yesterday, the dead man’s other children described their brother as being a drug addict who was almost always aggressive whenever he sought money and was denied.
On the day he attacked his father, he reportedly came home and began swearing at everyone and everything about him.
One sister said that his father confronted him, and as he became violent his grandmother intervened.
The old woman said that the violent youth chucked her and this prompted a further intervention of the now dead Rooplall.
On Wednesday, the accused, Nandalall Rooplall, appeared in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates Court, where he was charged and remanded for attempted murder.
The suspect’s father, Sonalall Rooplall, succumbed some hours later.
Police now say that they are awaiting the results of an autopsy to examine the possibility of modifying the current charge to the capital offence.
