…on radio set recovered from bandits
The Guyana Police Force is still awaiting word from the Guyana Sugar Corporation LBI, East Demerara Estates on how one of their radio sets ended up in the hands of bandits in the Berbice area.
The estate is still mum on how the radio set bearing its name LBI-GD, and with number 2-1997Serial number777 FW 497984 Motorola Sp50, ended up in the hands of some convicts in the East Canje area recently.
Police recently busted a notorious four-man gang which consisted of brothers Michael, Deon and Raymond Fraser and close friend Zakeer Mohamed after they had committed a series of robberies in the East Canje area.
The Police had found the radio set along with 21 live 12-gauge cartridges and a toque during the bust, which occurred on May 9.
Mohammed had told investigators that the radio set belonged to his father, Basher Mohamed, with whom he lived at Adelphi, East Canje, Berbice.
When questioned, the senior Mohamed told Police that he found the radio in a rubbish heap in the area, an explanation which the investigators did not buy (the Police questioned why he did not hand it over to the relevant authorities).
He was arrested and released on bail.
The Police have since expressed frustration at the attitude of Guysuco, since the sugar company has not been forthcoming with the necessary information in terms of ownership, so that the Police could proceed with their investigation.
The Police said that Guysuco’s records system leaves a lot to be desired, since there is no record to show when the radio set went missing.
A Senior Guysuco personnel told Kaieteur News that the radio set may have been stolen during the reign of terror on the East Coast, and may have been taken from Guysuco personnel when bandits held up a set of workers and some security guards in the LBI/ Buxton area a few years ago.
He said that operations at the East Demerara Estate should be investigated, because it must be a case of poor record keeping.
He added that, from the serial number, the radio set was issued in 1997 and serial number 2 means that it was given to the Field Manager.
The Police say that there could be links between this Berbice gang and the gangs operating on the East Coast, where they could use the set to communicate.
“Here is an opportunity to break something big and other people are screwing up,” a senior Police official told this newspaper.
