A Police Corporal attached to the Quick Reaction Group (QRG) last night underwent emergency surgery shortly before midnight after he was reportedly shot by Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the magistrate’s vehicle was parked on Woolford Avenue and as the police patrol vehicle approached, Gilhuys opened fire, hitting one of the ranks, whose name was given as Corporal George, in his stomach.
The police returned fire at the magistrate’s vehicle but the magistrate was reportedly unhurt.
However, his vehicle sustained several bullet holes.
This newspaper understands that following the incident, the magistrate went to the Brickdam Police Station and reported the matter.
However, when he was asked to surrender his licensed firearm, he reportedly walked out of the station compound.
News of the shooting spread quickly and several of the injured policeman’s colleagues assembled at the hospital for word on his condition.
Hospital sources said that the bullet entered the ranks abdomen from the back and exited at the front.
The policeman is reportedly in a stable but critical condition.
Up to press time it was not clear if Magistrate Gilhuys was arrested.
