Prompt action by the Guyana Fire Service yesterday afternoon averted a crisis at a secondary school in Georgetown.
According to Chief Fire Officer, Lawrence David, at about 17:21hrs yesterday, the Fire Service responded to a call at Christ Church Secondary School at Camp and Middle Streets.
He noted that a small fire was discovered on the ground floor of the building in one of the laboratories. A carbon dioxide extinguisher was used to douse the blaze. The fire is initially being treated as a blaze erupting due to an adverse chemical reaction involving Potassium Sulphate.
No students were in the building at the time but there were some painters in the building and it is unclear if the chemicals in the paint may have reacted with the Potassium Sulphate.
