Eighteen year old Rupert Giles arrived in Guyana from England this week to join Guyana’s National Under-19 Rugby squad preparing to contest the North American & West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) International Rugby Board (IRB) Junior World Trophy Qualifying tournament in Barbados from July 5 – 13.
Giles attends the prestigious Hartpury Rugby Academy and plays for the Academy’s 15s team.
He represented the Academy at England’s National Sevens championships at Rosslyn Park, and also plays for Lichfield Rugby Club, and represents Staffordshire County’s Under 18 team.
Giles is eligible to represent Guyana as the grandson of Ovid Crichton McGowan who was born in Den Amstel and was a prominent educator before he left Guyana to serve in the Royal Air Force and represented the British Combined Services as wicketkeeper and opening batsman.
Mc Gowan is 86 and takes a keen interest in his grandson’s budding rugby career. Rupert’s mother, Marion Giles, played Premier Division One Women’s Rugby in England.
Rupert’s mother Marion heard about the West Indies Rugby team’s participation in the Sevens World Series in San Diego in February and wrote to President of the West Indies Rugby Union, Kit Nascimento, about Rupert’s rapidly developing rugby career expressing an interest in his contesting for a place in Guyana’s national side resulting in his coming to Guyana to try out for the team.
He will join the National Squad in training this afternoon at the National Park and come under the eyes of the selectors for a place in the team which will be selected on Sunday.
