– strikers failed to take shots on goal
Technical Director of Guyana’s Football team Jamal Shabazz told the media that some of the same blunders that caused them the first game in Suriname visibly returned once again yesterday in the return fixture, at the Guyana National Stadium.
Shabazz said that once again the team did not take enough shots on goal in the first period despite the fact that they played with three strikers.
“We were not taking many shots on goal in the first half as we did in the second,” Shabazz told the media following Guyana’s elimination from the 2010 World Cup campaign after going down to Suriname by a 2-1 margin and a 3-1 overall aggregate.
“It is indeed disappointing, but an important statement was made by the Guyanese fans.”
He declared that the coaching staff can only do so much, but it is the players who have to go out on the pitch and execute what they were taught.
Responding to the lack of potency from his strikers, Shabazz pointed to the fact that they finished the game with as many as five compared with the three that they started with.
The TD recognised the hard work that the team underwent to prepare for the fixtures, adding that h has given Guyana as much as he can give. “I’ll be taking a break for a while.”
Quizzed on his future here, Shabazz responded by saying that football is a very dynamic sport and at some time as a coach you have to take everything into consideration, your future and all the other elements that go with it, but refrained from pronouncing on his future with the team.
He, however, pointed to the make up of the fans that witnessed the game, stating that it shows the start of something special for Guyana.
“The crowd support was a big statement despite the disappointing result and this should be the way forward, the mere presence of Government officials indicated that the opportunity is there to break both the social and racial barriers,” Shabazz said.
He paid tribute to the coaching staff and players, referring to their performance throughout the period as impressive.
