If only some sports administrators could display the energy and resourcefulness to constantly defy the odds, sports and its participants would be better placed to act as an economic and tourism stimulant that could position this country amongst the best in the Caribbean.
One such person who has been confronting all the challenges presented to him is President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Affeeze Khan and this fact was once again proven when he received $250,000 from Managing Director of Sankar’s Auto Works to assist in the construction of a Boxing Academy during a simple presentation ceremony held at the donor’s Head Office on Durey Lane, Campbellville yesterday.
The occasion was also attended by the four boxers currently preparing to participate in the Commonwealth Youth Games scheduled for Pune, India and National Coach Carl Franklin.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sankar told the young pugilists that boxing is just like any other endeavour in life where you have to be determined and disciplined to succeed.
“I hope that my contribution helps to create an impact in the sport in Guyana where it can make a difference in the lives of our youths, especially those in the more depressed areas.”
Sankar disclosed that this was not the first time that his Company has offered their support for sports, citing football in the Linden community and table tennis as a few of the other disciplines they had supported in the past.
Khan responding on behalf of the GABA commended Sankar for stretching out his hands to encourage and promote the development of amateur boxing in Guyana.
“This money will be used to help develop a home for amateur boxing in Guyana, one which will cater for youths from all ten regions.”
He said that the facility was necessary because it will serve as a means to get the youths off the streets and be gainfully occupied in some form of recreation and offer them an alternative.
