ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, through the Rose Hall Town Bakewell Second Division Cricket Team, donated a complete volume of encyclopaedia to the Lower Corentyne Secondary School last week. The package is worth some $300,000.
Imran Ally, the head of the institution, said they are grateful for the books, which would be a plus for the literacy drive. He also hoped that the partnership would continue as teachers strive to improve the performance of the students. Chief Executive Officer of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster, an old student of the school, stressed the importance of reading.
The volume of encyclopaedia is to be used only in the reference section of the school’s library, and as such cannot be lent to anyone.
He said that, between 1991 and 1992, the club spearheaded an operation that saw massive rehabilitation to the school to the tune of $4 million. A benab was constructed, as was a bicycle shed, and repairs were done to the electrical system, fence, and other areas.
The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club is known for its annual $3 million charity programme and its pro-education and anti-drug campaign. In 2004, the club achieved the Rotary International Vocational Award for its outstanding work in youth and community development.
The organization shared three Commonwealth Youth Awards in 1992, 1994 and 2000, with its parent body, the St. Francis Community Developers. In 1995 and 1996, the club and its parent body also shared two National Youth Awards for outstanding youth work.
The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club has a number of major programs intended to assist the less fortunate.
