In recent times, there have been numerous complaints regarding the services provided by doctors at the Medical Outpatient Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
These include doctors closing up their offices at 15:00 hours on a daily basis, leaving long lines of patients waiting for treatment.
These patients are forced to return the following day.
Over the past few weeks, several patients have voiced their concern about the issue, pointing out that there is a notice board at the department stating that it offers services from 8:00hrs in the morning to 16:00hrs in the afternoon, but this is not the case. However, Chief Executive Officer of The Georgetown Public Hospital, Michael Khan, has refuted this. He stated that the hospital has a log book that indicates that the doctors leave after 16:oo hrs every afternoon.
He, however, noted that the Outpatient Department has become overburdened as a result of the actions of health care personnel from some health care centres around the country. Khan’s claim was validated through investigative work by this newspaper. Checks at several health centres around the city indicated that, while there are designated doctors in place to serve in the various districts, some have been shirking their responsibilities. In many cases, when patients visit health centres in their districts, they are told that there is no doctor present.
A source at one health centre told this newspaper that this is so because many times the doctors leave at midday, leaving a long line of patients, who then have no other alternative but to seek treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The source added that doctors at the health centres are required to report for duty at 8:00hrs and leave at 16:00 hours. However, checks have shown that this is not the case at several health centres around the city, thus contributing to the overcrowding and overburden at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
