Twelve youth centres geared to facilitate over 12,000 youths from across Guyana, the Caribbean and other visiting contingents are to be constructed at the National Park in Georgetown to constitute the Tenth Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA X) Youth Village.
According to a press release, the Youth centres are being organised by the President’s Youth Award Guyana (PYARG) under the broad theme “Focus on Youth for Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA)”.
According to Chair of the CARIFESTA X Youth sub-committee, Alfred King, the Youth Village, which will run from August 25 to 29, is expected to encourage youths to participate in activities and engage their time wisely during and after CARIFESTA.
King posited that the youths would develop meaningful life-skills, which will help them to lead meaningful lives.
Each of the twelve youth centres will foster youth development in a number of areas. These include edutainment, dance, music, craft, fashion, fitness, technology, health, and living a life of adventure and discovery. The committee is currently evaluating the design presented for the construction of the village, which is expected to commence soon.
In an effort to garner wide participation, each youth centre within the Village will publicise its daily programme of activity a few weeks before the opening of CARIFESTA.
All interested youths are encouraged to participate in the Youth Village since it offers an interactive and relaxed environment for learning and fun during CARIFESTA.
Meanwhile, some 50 youths from across the Caribbean along with 100 Guyanese youth representatives are scheduled to meet on 23 August at the Guyana Convention Centre to discuss among other issues, Caribbean Culture and Opportunity, Healthy Lifestyles and Substance Abuse.
The meeting is also expected to generate discussion surrounding the role of edutainment in influencing positive lifestyles among youth.
