– Berbice fishing official
Berbice fishermen are claiming that one of their own members was a spy for a prominent pirate gang, which was broken earlier this year by Suriname authorities.
According to a top official for a Berbice fishing co-operative society, the member, who was also serving on the co-operative’s executive, was suspended by the society but the move is not meeting the support of the Fisheries Department and the Chief Cooperative Development Office.
Yesterday, members of the Upper Corentyne Fishermen Society were expected to protest moves to block the member’s removal from the executive, but after meetings with the Government and other officials, they have decided to have further talks later this month.
Piracy acts have decreased significantly since several members of a pirate gang were captured earlier this year in Suriname, with a number of Guyanese fishermen as prisoners.
Last year, several Guyanese were captured in Suriname and fingered as pirates.
According to the fishing official yesterday, it was long suspected that local fishermen were involved in piracy acts which reached crisis level last year.
An estimated 50 boats were robbed and more than $30 million in catch and materials stolen last year alone.
Officials from Guyana and Suriname have since met and signed an agreement to cooperate in catching the pirates and controlling crime along their countries’ borders.
