A 20-year-old woman from Mahaica was yesterday fined a total of $180,000 with an alternative of three years’ imprisonment for uttering a forged document.
The accused, Maharanie Ramnarine, made her appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on March 24, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, she tendered to an Immigration officer a passport bearing the number 144766, issued in the name of Maharanie Williams, purporting the same to be hers.
It is also alleged that on March 23, at Mon Repos, she conspired with persons unknown to forge one travel document. Ramnarine pleaded guilty to both charges.
She was represented by defence counsel Adrian Thompson, who told the court that his client is actually the victim of a crime.
He told the court that his client gave someone the necessary documents for them to get her an Inter Caribbean Travel Document, since she was supposed to travel to Grenada. He said that the document with which she was found was what was given to her by the person.
However, Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the woman reportedly inserted a photograph of herself in the document, and departed to St Vincent, where she was subsequently arrested.
Based on investigation, the woman was deported and it was later discovered that Maharanie Williams does not exist. She was fined $90,000 on each of the charges, with an alternative of three years’ imprisonment.
