New Amsterdam Multilateral School played unbeaten to win the inaugural Amerally Sawmills Inter Secondary school U-15 football competition, which was held last Tuesday for schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje area at the Scot Church ground in New Amsterdam.
In the final they scored a hard fought 1-0 victory over long time nemesis Berbice High School to take away the attractive Amaco Sawmills trophy.
The schools were divided into two groups with six of the eight schools invited participating in the competition. Group A comprised of Berbice High School (BHS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) and Vryman’s Ervin Secondary School (VESS), while Group B was made up of New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) and Canje Secondary School (CSS) the errant schools were Overwinning and Trinity Street Secondary.
The competition was played on a Round Robin basis in the groups with the winner of the two groups advancing to the semi-finals.
Semi-final play saw group B winners NAMS trashing VESS 4-0 and group A winners BHS squeezing past arch rivals BEI 4-2 on penalty kicks after they ended 0-0 at the end of regulation time.
The final was fiercely contested by two evenly match teams with both creating numerous chances and counterattacks. However it was the boys from NAMS that were able to maintain their unbeaten run via a Gavin Fraser goal.
At the end of the competition the winning NAMS contingent were presented with the beautiful Amaco Sawmills Trophy and 16 gold medals for a job well done. Second placed BHS had to settle the runner-up trophy and the 16 silver medals.
The NAMS ball weavers also made a clean sweep of the individual prizes that were on offer; goal scorer Gavin Fraser took away the MVP trophy, Akeem Hall received his accolade for prolific work throughout the day, being the highest goal scorer, while Goalkeeper Alvin Joseph received the best keeper prize for his outstanding work between the uprights. They all received trophies. Each of the eight school invited were also presented with a football.
Donor Tony Amerally and other representatives of the company were on hand to present the trophy and incentives won during the competition. He stated that this effort was part of his company cooperate policy of giving back to the society from where they operate. He further noted that as long as the plans presented are good they will be willing to assist especially if the ventures have to deal with youths. .
The competition was organized by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club and was coordinated by former national players Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and Sam Jones.
