The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club last week handed over close to $1 million worth of items to a number of organizations.
The gesture was made possible by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Chairman of the Rose Hall Interim Management Committee, Bhadenauth Somrah, received some $130,000 worth of educational kits, indoor games such as chess sets, checkers and dominoes, along with hygiene kits.
Except for the games, these items are intended to be used as prizes during activities in September to mark the town’s 38th year in existence. The games are for the Council itself.
During an interview with the Kaieteur News, Chief Executive Officer of the club, Hilbert Foster, said the gesture is an indication of the club’s determination to foster closer ties with the Interim Management Committee, and aid in the development of the municipality.
As a result of a packed schedule for 2008, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club would not be a part of the town’s anniversary celebrations, as it did last year, he pointed out.
Rose Hall, with boundaries at Williamsburg and the J.C. Chandisingh Access Road, became a municipality on September 20th, 1970.
On September 19, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club plans to pull off a Youth Career Day.
Mr. Bhadenauth Somrah, in expressing thanks to both the club and the church, said this move would make plans for the upcoming day easier.
Meanwhile, sports equipment to the tune of $200,000 was given to seven schools in East Berbice. The package included volleyballs, basketballs, lawn tennis balls, table tennis balls, nets and racquets.
The beneficiaries are students and teachers of the J.C. Chandisingh, Lower Corentyne and the Canje Secondary Schools, Berbice High, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Corentyne Comprehensive High, and the Port Mourant Community High Schools.
The Bermine, Chesney, Port Mourant, Rose Hall East Canje, Kildonan, Scottsburg and Whim Cricket Clubs, in addition to the National Psychiatric Hospital, got some $576,000 worth of educational kits.
Representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were Elder Bert Bullock and Robin Bullock.
The handing-over ceremony was held at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
