Well known Berbice headmaster Augustus Outar is the lone Guyanese to have successfully completed this years West Indies Cricket Umpires exam (WICUA) and has now joined the ranks of a fully qualified umpire.
The school teacher, who was the lone Berbician out of a total of nine that took the exam, emerged with a total of 84 marks.
Outar, who has been umpiring since 1994, successfully completed the preliminary umpires exams in 2006 and passed the final written in 2007. He was also successful in the practical part of the exams in the latter part of 2007.
The Oral exam which is the final stage of the many phases which an umpire has to go through before he becomes fully qualified was done on Sunday December 9, 2007 at the Georgetown Cricket Club Pavilion Georgetown.
Outar, who is the head master of the Friends Primary school on the East Bank of Berbice since 2001, had earlier served as headmaster of the Plegt-Anker Primary school since 1991 and has been teaching since 1977. He is presently attached to the Guyana Elections Commission as an Assistant Registration officer.
Of the nine Guyanese that took the final stages of the WICUA exams, only Outar was able to emerge with flying colours. The next four in line gained 78, 75, 68 and 58 marks respectively.
Outar expressed thanks to the Umpires council especially senior umpires Rafique Latiff and Clement Brusche for their help.
