A blunder by the experienced Walter George was what caused Yamaha Caribs (Men) the Banks DIH Sevens One-day Rugby title which was played yesterday at the National Park.
George, who had possession of the ball in the dying moments of the game with the Caribs leading 19-17 failed to take the ball into touch which resulted in the opposition regaining control of the ball and enough time to score and take the crown.
In the ensuing play, national player Elwin Chase evaded numerous tackles, before outrunning his markers to end over the try-line to give his team the lead.
Satesh Samaroo then netted the conversion to give Hornets a hard fought 24-19 victory and title.
In the Women’s segment, Hornets who had conceded the first game in the best of three finals defeated Caribs on points’ difference after the two teams split the series 1-1 with the other game being drawn.
In the men’s final, national Dane Parks gave Hornets the lead with a beautiful run, out-sprinting his rivals to score a try. Leon Greaves then missed the conversion.
West Indies Captain Claudius Butts then responded almost immediately after with a similar effort, evading his markers to dump himself over the backline.
Fellow West Indies teammate Theodore Henry made the conversion as Caribs assumed a 7-5 advantage in the first period.
Henry then stretched their lead with a try which he also converted as Caribs enjoyed a 14-5 ascendancy.
However, Elwin Chase narrowed the deficit with a terrific effort that ended over the try-line as Hornets attacked with ferocity. Once again the conversion was missed this time by Peabo Hamilton as the half finished 14-10 in Caribs favour.
In the second period, George produced a tremendous effort to end over the try-line as Caribs increased their advantage to 19-10, before Hornets on the back of a try by Delroy Gordon and a subsequent conversion from Samaroo pulled themselves back in the game, down 17-19 deep in the final stanza.
A blunder by George restored possession to Hornets and Chase then collected a pass from the back, before storming his way past a host of defenders to place himself over the end zone. The ensuing conversion by Samaroo was just a matter of formality as the final whistle sounded shortly after.
The Ladies segment was an interesting affair as Caribs won the first encounter 7-0, while the second game ended in a nil-all stalemate, before Hornets went on the rampage in the decider to win comfortably and steal the title.
