After an anxious wait to hear whether or not Guyana’s return World Cup fixture against Suriname will be played here, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) yesterday received positive news when Guyana National Stadium Manager Anthony Xavier gave verbal approval to the GFF for the use of the venue to stage the match on June 22.
According to General Secretary of the GFF Noel Adonis, he received a call from Xavier yesterday morning telling him that approval was given for the use of the stadium to host the return game as Guyana open their campaign to qualify for the FIFA 2010 World Cup Finals scheduled to be held in South Africa.
Adonis, however, reiterated that so far, it has only been communication via telephone and no agreement has been signed as yet, but was positive that the news is accurate.
Guyana will commence their campaign on June 14 with an away match against Suriname in Paramaribo.
Should Guyana defeat Suriname, they will then be placed in a group of six and will have a chance to play a minimum of five home matches as they seek to advance further into the tournament.
