Dear Editor,
On the Kala Milan show on NCN, Sunday 18th May, I listened to the host, Dr. Vindyhia Persaud, inviting individuals and families to call their mandir for support and assistance for alcoholics.
I am more than pleased to hear this. I had highlighted this aspect of Rev. C. F. Andrews’s report on his visit to Guyana in 1929 (published in his Impressions, edited by Prof Basdeo Mangru) in the Arts Forum Page, Kaieteur News, 11th, May, 2008.
It has been a point of lamentation for decades that Governments, sugar estate management and liquor producing companies have not thought of providing counselling services and rehabilitation facilities for persons hooked on the bottle, in view of its negative consequences on family life.
I am pleased that Dr. Persaud is also paying attention to the serious social crisis in our midst.
I am interested in seeing a programme that caters to all Guyanese, regardless of race, religion and class, to staunch the degradation in the society from this source.
