A planned day at the creek ended in tragedy for a Better Hope, East Coast Demerara family following the death of a baby, who is believed to have been struck by the very mini bus that was taking them to the outing.
Ryan Imchand, one year 11 months old, of 37 Second Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital shortly before midday yesterday.
The driver of the mini bus, who is in Police custody, claimed that he felt no impact nor did he feel that the vehicle had run over anything.
In fact, Police said, had the vehicle run over the child, he would have sustained more injuries.
According to reports, the family had planned a day at the creek and had hired mini bus BHH 8891, which arrived to take them at about 10:45 hours.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver parked the bus in front of the family’s home and was waiting for them when tragedy struck.
According to the dead child’s mother, Tricia Goberdan, he was outside with the driver of the vehicle and she has since learnt that the driver left him on a table in the yard and proceeded into the minibus.
“I don’t know, but Ryan must have run out behind him unknowingly,” said Goberdan.
The visibly distraught woman, speaking with this newspaper during a wake held for her dead son last evening, could only muster enough strength to say, “It is a sad, sad day for me and my family.”
A source told this newspaper that when the driver restarted the vehicle and was reversing, he observed the child lying on the ground with blood flowing through his nose and mouth.
The child was picked up and rushed to the hospital, but by then he had already perished.
Investigations are continuing.
Ryan Imchand leaves to mourn his father, Vicky Imchand, mother and five year-old sister.
