The Nabaclis Community Library on the East Coast of Demerara received a timely boost on Friday, thanks to the Benschop Foundation, which donated a quantity of books that will improve the dwindling stock of the facility.
Making the presentation on behalf of the Foundation was Lisa Drinnan, the niece of mark Benschop, who is visiting with her mother from Pennsylvania USA, to the facility’s Chief Assistant, Annie Charles.
The books were donated by former army major Aubrey Retimyer, who is a founding member of the Foundation.
Speaking to this newspaper, Drinnan said that she was pleased to be involved in the project. “I’m just happy to be a part of this and to see the smile on the children’s faces,” she said.
According to Benschop, the list of books includes novels and texts on several subjects.
He said that the aim is to develop a love for reading among children in the community.
“That’s our aim — reading and sports, to take them off the streets to be involved in constructive things. Mr. Retimyer is very concerned about the youths of Guyana and wants to play his role to ensure that they stay on the right path,” Benschop said.
Annie Charles, Senior Assistant of the library, told this newspaper that the donation is a timely one, since their goal is to encourage children to get into the habit of reading.
“I think knowing Mr. Benschop will make the children want to come to the library when they know that they (the books) have been donated by him,” Charles told Kaieteur News.
During the simple ceremony, it was observed that the roof of the facility was leaking, causing the officials there to make temporary arrangements to preserve the books.
Benschop undertook to seek assistance for the repairs to the roof, and urged other public spirited persons to chip in.
Minutes after the presentation, Region Four Chairman Clinton Cornette, who was in the area, promised to have the matter rectified, since the library is housed in the Grove/ Haslington Neighbourhood Democratic Council Building.
