A nine-year-old boy drowned in a canal near the Blairmont sugar estate at around 15:30 hrs yesterday while swimming there with two friends.
Hemraj Persaud, of Lot 68 Bacchus Street, Rosignol, Berbice, reportedly plunged into the deep waterway with his companions, although he could not swim.
The lad’s mother, Shareen Khan, said that she went out around 15:00 hrs, leaving her son and his three other siblings at home.
Kaieteur News understands that Hemraj was eating his dinner on the steps when two friends arrived on a bicycle and invited him to go swimming.
Despite being cautioned by his 12-year-old sister, the lad left his meal and followed the friends to the canal.
According to reports, Hemraj’s friends plunged in first and invited him to join them.
Although he could not swim, the Rosignol Primary School pupil also plunged into the water.
From all reports, he immediately encountered difficulty and sank.
Hemraj’s mother, whose husband passed away last year, said she learned of the tragedy when the two friends arrived at her home and informed her that her son had drowned.
His body was recovered shortly after and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead.
