Several officials and residents of Linden were yesterday given a detailed explanation of how to prepare for the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) X and were also privileged to witness a sample of some of the exciting features of the festival. The region will be one of six to host various aspects of CARIFESTA and were sensitised by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, and members of the CARIFESTA Secretariat who visited the region. Among the highlights of the sensitisation campaign was the launching of a CARIFESTA caravan at the Mackenzie bus park.
The caravan will be promoting CARIFESTA at popular locations in the town, at regular intervals, as part of the many promotional activities in place leading up to the festival. The launching featured chutney performances from dancing sensation, Sandella, and the performers who mimicked the CARIFESTA logo at the opening ceremony in the forecourt of Bank of Guyana on April 23.
Minister Anthony and the CARIFESTA team also met regional officials and stakeholders in the culture field to discuss with them the means of preparedness and also to solicit their support.
Chairman of Region Ten, Mortimer Mingo, who is a member of the CARIFESTA board, was also present as the Minister met with regional councillors at the office of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and the Linmine Constabulary buildings.
The Minister, while in discussion with residents, said they should consider themselves fortunate since several other regions would love to host such a mega event.
The festival which will be held during the period August 22 to 31 will showcase over 100 cultural events.
Minister Anthony told the region that planning at the regional level is crucial as it will determine the region’s ability to effectively manage and determine which events are appropriate for hosting.
In this regard he called for the establishment of a regional planning committee that will support the Ministry and the secretariat’s efforts to ensure that the hosting of the festival in the regions is accomplished successfully.
“We have less than 100 days to go before hosting CARIFESTA and we are relying on you to coordinate, manage and step up as good hosts,” Minister Anthony urged the residents.
The Minister also boasted about the benefits which the festival will bring to the Lindeners as it will present an opportunity for the town to be marketed and it will also encourage visitors to return.
‘You have a proud mining history; you have a fish festival, and the popular annual Linden town week activities. We have so far 1376 persons already confirmed to come to Guyana for CARIFESTA and this is a golden opportunity to impress them,” Minister Anthony said.
The Minister was also optimistic about the region’s capabilities to participate in the festival as the many talented performers reside there. He said a major search for talent will be launched and will reveal the region’s hidden talent in folk songs, dramatic poetry, drumming and many others. He urged persons who are aware of talented performers to identify them early. Mingo during yesterday’s meeting made a commitment that the region will immediately begin the task of planning for the event.
