A 25-seater passenger boat burst into flames Thursday afternoon mere minutes before passengers boarded it at the New Amsterdam Market Warf where it was docked. According to information received some time Thursday afternoon the captain and one of his crew men were on the vessel about to board passengers when the captain turned the engine on. There was a spark that emanated from the battery area. It quickly ignited and caught fire to some gasoline that was splattered on the battery after fueling.
The flames caused an explosion that sent the captain and his crewman plunging overboard to save themselves from the inferno that had already consumed the boat.
Passengers who were nearby quickly slashed the docking rope for the boat to set it free to avoid the fire from spreading unto the wharf.No-one was injured and the captain and his crewman were rescued by the coast guards who responded promptly. The vessel was loading for a trip to Sand Hills.
