Come Alive Network Incorporated (CANI), a non-governmental organization, yesterday held its fourth annual Youth Conference at the Pegasus Hotel under the theme ‘Empower Youth’.
Managing Director of CANI, Kadeem Gordon said that the event was very important to the organization as it served as an opportunity to truly reach out to Guyanese youths. He told the media, “This is a vision that we would have had for approximately four years ago, whereby we would’ve wanted to provide the platform for young people to meet their representatives and also to enable them to benefit from a number of training sessions that we would usually have in the organization. We also wanted to provide the platform for us to be able to hear from them, they can even question the representatives. More so it’s a developmental activity”.
Gordon stated that the one day conference accommodated youths from regions two, four, five, six, eight and 10, who would have registered both on-line and in person on the day of the event. He noted that the conference last year saw speakers like First lady Mrs. Sandra Granger and Chief Justice (ag) Roxanne George.
This year the Pioneering Empowerment Panel included ICT engineer Rosanna Ferreira, Director of Right Media Dr. Rosh Khan, Joanann Edghill-Stuart of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Dason Anthony, Business owner and Attorney at Law, Mandel More. The session was also attended by the Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael among many other imperative speakers.
He stated that the event was organized with the theme in mind, so young people will be able to hear success stories.
During the session, an inspirational spoken word was done by Renata Burnette and was followed by Attorney at Law, Asif Hosein-Shah, a Trinidadian, who told his success story and how he was constantly discouraged at some of the most critical points of his life. He shared that the difficulties he faced had however, empowered him to deal with the hurt he felt during his father’s several heart attacks and his sister’s death fight.
Meanwhile, the Director of Youth during her address stated that over 2000 youths were engaged in projects. She also noted that approximately 400 students graduated from the Kuru-Kuru Training Centre and Sophia Training Centre among others.
“We had a total of 1666 students between the ages of 10-35 who participated in events.”
According to Carmichael, the Ministry wants to ensure activities and whatever is done, is done with youths in mind. As it relates to projections, she said the Ministry realizes the need for entrepreneurial skills to be taught as well as assisting young people in choosing the correct careers as well as making good decisions. She said, “Currently we are hosting camps in every region except Regions Nine and One (which is because these regions had specially requested these programmes).”
Approximately 343 young people are benefitting from these camps and will be able to apply the acquired skills and knowledge in business management and other areas. More projections include implementation of a number of skills training exercises to promote a “green economy” in the coming year.
Yesterday’s session proceeded until midday and was followed by a break out session whereby the members of the conference were taken on field trips to the Carnegie School of Home Economics, Department of Environment and St. Joseph High School.
The Conference had approximately 300 youths between the ages of 14 and 30. Attendees were not charged a registration fee, since Gordon noted that the event was fully sponsored by Maggies, Sterling, Courts, Spicy Dish, Bettencourt’s, Star Party Rentals, Caribbean Containers, Pegasus Hotel and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
According to the Director, throughout the years they have had “tremendous turnouts” and it is because of this they did prior registration so as to help resolve the crowd and waiting time attached.
The chairpersons of the conference were Mr. Patrick Huntley and Ms. Crystal Barclay.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
