Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, on Monday last, assembled with the World Bank’s Social, Urban, Rural and Resilience group to discuss several vital subjects linked to climate change and progression of the agricultural sector.
Some issues discussed were the status of the Flood Risk Management and Cunha Canal Rehabilitation Projects which are being completed by the Agriculture Sector Development Unit (ASDU).
Minister Holder, was introduced to the new Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, Mr. Deokle Geert Wielinga, who replaces World Bank Senior Country Director, Mr. Pierre Nadji, announced that additional funding can be made available for critical drainage and irrigation needs.
Scheduled projects include the construction of dams along the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) and Pump Stations at key areas.
Development projects for the Agriculture Sector between ASDU and the World Bank was discussed.
ASDU’s Project Coordinator, Dhaneshwar James, explained that the intended projects are to be completed by January 2019.
The Minister restated the vitality of projects of these kinds to Guyana’s “fight to combat climate change.” He added that his Ministry anticipates persistent partnership with the World Bank so as to develop agriculture in Guyana further.
Holder mentioned the necessity of “effective drainage and irrigation structures” which will further improve livelihood of farmers.
“Being able to provide the necessary services whereby, farmers’ livelihoods are protected is one of the mandates of the ASDU and the NDIA by-and-large and something the Government of Guyana is committed.” the Minister said.
