Dear Editor,
It is very disturbing to know that there is a drug shortage at the National Ophthalmology Center in Port Mourant, Berbice since September last year. I visited the institution last September with my dad to have his eye treated for cataract. The doctors who attended to him stated that he will have to undergo surgery but they do not have the medications required for surgery at the time and we should keep checking with the institution via phone. Numerous calls and visits, the most recent being Saturday, to the hospital since have been greeted with “we are out of medication.”
This causes me to wonder if the situation has been brought to the Ministry of Health’s attention and if not why. I am also puzzled as to what could be the reason for such a delay, if the Health ministry is aware of the situation. The relevant authorities owe the Guyanese people, in particular Berbicans, an explanation as well as a solution to the issue as many poor people are suffering.
