The Ministry of Social Cohesion will be launching an Inter-Village Exchange Camp on August 13, 2017. The camp aims at 160 participants ranging between the ages of 16 and 25 from 23 villages across Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
The Camp targets pre-identified peer leaders and is scheduled for seven days. The objective of the Camp is to promote an appreciation of differences so as to construct integrated communities.
Programme Coordinator at the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Ms. Sharon Patterson stated that the initiative of the Camp was developed by the Ministry through nationwide consultations. She said that the Camp will focus on educating the attendees on the functions of social cohesion in nation building and constructing their power to promote togetherness in their home towns.
“This is a pilot activity and it is an inter-village programme, because it will be promoting geographic inclusiveness. We want the young indigenous persons to not only understand diversity, but also feel included, and so we want to develop a cadre of young people who can go back into their villages and help with building a cohesive society,” Patterson said.
Toshaos and village leaders would have been the one to choose the participants since they would have demonstrated leadership qualities and are engaged in community development activities, she stated.
The Ministry, in an attempt to make certain the youths are exposed to information that will not only support the Ministry’s message but offer personal development opportunities, has arranged meetings that are centred on endorsing trust, unity, equity, equality and an appreciation of diversity among their peers, with the overall goal of creating an enabling environment that will cultivate community development.
The importance of education, career opportunities in various fields, business opportunities at the community level, youth and the law, as well as social issues such as Trafficking in Persons (TIPs) and domestic violence by representatives from Government agencies, educational institutions and businesses, will be expounded on during the sessions at the Camp.
In addition to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force, the Ministry of Public Health has consented to partake in the event and has committed to sending its Adolescent Health team to “have a presence at the activities.”
Addressing the participants will be representatives from the Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited. The company promises to host a Banking and Business episode which seeks to avail financial support for the commencement of small businesses. The organization had also recently given a cheque of a confidential amount to support its participation in the Camp.
Thankful for the contribution, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, acknowledged the donation and expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for being part of the activity and for making the event a reality. The minister also expressed interest in similar partnerships for the future.
Supporting the event also are RUBIS Guyana Incorporated, MACORP, Gaico Construction and General Services Incorporated, Mohammed’s Enterprise, and Mekdeci Machinery and Construction Incorporated.
Dr. Norton declared that ministry has also sketched a full plan of interactive activities which includes outdoor games and physical exercises, along with a campfire and a special cultural evening all centred at giving power to make members, individually and collectively, contribute to their particular community.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
