It was not the first time he has spoken about tardiness, but perhaps yesterday’s proceedings turned out to be the proverbial last straw which left Finance Minister, Winston Jordan, at his wits’ end.
At the opening of the Budget 2018 Preparation and Sensitisation Training Workshop, the Finance Minister observed that the event could not begin for the scheduled time of 9:00 am, since several agency officials were late.
Before commencing his address, this was the first matter Jordan sought to deal with. The Finance Minister said that persons need to desist with such a laissez-faire and lackadaisical attitude.
He lamented, “Why can’t we get our events started on time? I was available since 8:45, but the Director rushed into my office and said no, no, not as yet…and when I came in people were still coming in. People are still turning up.”
Jordan added, “It is a disaster for our country that we cannot observe time; we don’t have the discipline to be on time and to get anything done on time. And we are supposed to be the leaders. What do we expect of people who we supposedly have to lead?”
The Finance Minister told those present that he would not be attending another meeting or another workshop if “we can’t get our act together.”
Jordan said that if the programme says he is to make an address at 9:00am, then he would expect some modicum of respect and decency from persons and they would be seated at least five minutes before the agenda starts.
Jordan said he has even observed that in the case of President David Granger, there are demonstrations of an apparent love for being late by some. In this regard, Jordan said, “I have seen the President arrive and waiting on people…people still strolling in.”
The Finance Minister said that he is passionate about time. He made it clear that he abhors people coming to work late or using any old excuse for sick leave just to avoid being at work. With respect to the latter, he says, “Be careful what you wish for.”
