-grants bail to illegal firearm accused
Fifty-six-year-old Samuel James of Baramita, North West District was yesterday granted bail
in the sum of $50,000 after he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The defendant denied the charge which read that on July 11, last, at William Place, North West District, he had in his possession a 16-gauge shotgun, when he was not the holder of a firearm license at the time.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the prevalence and penalty of the offense.
The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant did not outline any special reason as to why bail should be granted to him.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, police acting on information received, carried out a raid at the defendant’s home where the firearm was found between two posts in the bedroom.
However, the Chief Magistrate granted bail to the defendant citing that the special reason for bail is that the prison has no space to accommodate prisoners.
The prosecutor said that the case file is incomplete and the defendant will make his next court appearance on August 9 at the Mathews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
