Rice Farmers of Yakusari Black Bush Polder are complaining that their rice fields are being destroyed by cattle. The farmers stressed that since the announcement made by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Wednesday not to impound cattle during the flood, it is costing them.
Raymond Joseph related that he spent hours trying to protect his rice crop from the cattle. “When you chase out one set another set coming in; this is our livelihood and the cattle farmers ain’t have no sympathy. They sleeping and you got to watch their cows.” Another farmer contended, “They coming by the flock and you asking them cattle owner to assist but they don’t care, as long as dem animals graze, dem good.”
They are pleading with Nagamootoo to rescind his decision of allowing animals to roam free and not be impounded.
Last week Nagamootoo instructed the police to not impound animals during the flood at Black Bush Polder. The decision was made after it was reported that cattle were reportedly dying due to the flood waters in the Cookrite Savannah area, Black Bush Polder.
More than 1000 acres was said to be under water, up to chest high in some parts. Farmers of Cookrite Savannah stated that there are over 7000 head of cattle together with sheep, goats and horses.
The farmers had stated that only one of the three sluice doors is in operation at Adventure, Corentyne while the pump at Eversham and Number 43 Village are not being put into operation. The affected farmers went to the regional office of the Prime Minister seeking the assistance of the Prime Minister’s Representative, Gobin Harbhajan.
