Dear Editor,
Of course Exxon from the USA will accept the production agreement and decide to invest. The CEO of Exxon is aligned with Trump, and the USA has decided to withdraw from the climate change agreement. It is now up to us to take the high road and stop production. With flooding occurring at a higher frequency we must not aid in the destruction of the stability of our homeland.
The study by the consultant shows the low levels of oil consumption that exists today in Guyana. This is good news in that we can curtail a large percentage of our consumption by changing over the grid from fossil fuels to wind and solar. This will leave transportation’s consumption of fossil fuels to contend with. Given that we continue to be an agriculture and raw material based economy, the development of a rail system that covers transportation will aid in further reducing the need for such an energy source. A good example of a good wind system may be seen in Cape Cod, where with few wind turbines they are able to service relatively strong demand considering Guyana’s consumption levels.
We must make what seems to be the difficult choice and withdraw from oil production and recommit to the climate change agreement and its principles. As we transition towards the green economy we must team up with our allies to make this transition in the best way possible. The current technology for solar is strong enough to support our Savannahs and the market price for this technology is quite affordable due to the strong Chinese market presence. Our scale in terms of natural resources and our population globally allows us to be able to take this courageous step forward towards a more stable climate. This is the challenge and we must be confident in our ability to accomplish this objective.
