In recognizing International Children’s Day in China, celebrated on June 1, every year and in celebrating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Guyana, the Chinese community has partnered with the Guyana Book Foundation to donate books to schools in Regions Two, Three and Six.
The initiative which is the first of its kind conducted by the association saw students from the primary schools benefitting from books of all categories.
One of the schools that will be reaping the benefits of the donation, the Port Mourant Primary School, was paid a visit by executive members of the association. The school’s library was boosted with over 300 books on History, Geography and much more.
May Cheung, one of the association’s members, explained that the first set of books was donated to the Windsor Forest Primary School on June 2. “Today we are donating the second set to the Port Mourant Primary and the No.43 Primary Schools”.
Cheung said, “Children are important; we should improve their literacy and give them a good education that can change our lives and country. The Chinese believe that in a book there is a house of gold and reading can bring you a bright future.”
The Head Teacher of the Port Mourant Primary expressed her gratitude for the kind gesture and promised to make full use of the books.
Students from the school were also present and showed interest in the books while some began reading instantly.
The association assured that it would not be the first and last of such donations.
