An inmate of the New Amsterdam Prison who was serving an 18-month sentence for simple larceny has once again landed himself in hot water with an additional sentence of three years.
Deochand Phillips, 53, of Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice, appeared at the Reliance Magistrate Court before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer to answer to the charge of Introducing narcotics into Prisons. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Phillips was also ordered to pay a fine of $15,000 or two months imprisonment in addition to the three years.
According to the facts of the case, Phillips who was serving an 18-month sentence and had already spent one prison year (9 months) with another nine remaining, on the 10th June, last, at approximately 10:00 hrs was involved in community work outside of the prison.
Upon his return and in company of other inmates later that day he was subjected to a routine search by prison officers at the western prison gates before entering. During the search, two parcels wrapped in a transparent plastic bag and another in a black plastic bag was found in his crotch and waist of his pants respectively. Both parcels were inspected and a quantity of seeds, stems and leaves suspected to be cannabis were discovered. The accused was told of the offence committed to which he admitted that the parcels belonged to him.
The parcels were weighed and amounted to 50g. They were then lodged at the Central Police Station.
