Two miners were yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly stealing and beating their employer.
The men appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Michael Isaacs, 30, of Lot 16 Paradise, East Coast Demerara; and Cologne Tony, 24, of Lot 46 Section F Number 53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, both denied the charge which stated that on May 21, last, at Pamela Landing, Potaro River, Essequibo, robbed Erick Singh of $85,000 and one pennyweight raw gold valued $10,000.
At the time of, or immediately after the robbery, the pair used personal violence against the victim.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the defendants citing the serious nature of the offense and the fact that the virtual complainant is still hospitalised and that the items were not recovered.
The court heard that the victim and the defendants are known to each other. The prosecutor told the court that victim is the owner of a shop. The defendants went to the shop when the victim was asleep and attacked him with a cutlass.
The prosecutor stated that the victim received several chops about his body and was taken to the hospital where he is admitted.
Tony when given a chance to address the court stated, “Me and Singh does live in the same house. I was asleep when I suddenly heard him crying for help and that his went I ran out the shop and called for help. I am innocent.”
Isaacs told the court, “I don’t thief and chop people. Is a man name ‘Buck Man’ from Berbice thief and chop the man.
Both men were remanded and they will make their next court appearance on July 18, in the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
