Dear Editor,
The great Mahatma Gandhi taught us about the futility of blaming each other for the ‘problems’ of our country. The similarly great Nelson Mandella, a student of the Mahatma, has demonstrated in the most practical way, the efficacy of this philosophy. My travels out of Guyana afford me opportunities to reflect on our long-suffering country and every time I do so I wish that we can stop our collective tendencies to point fingers at one another for the travails of our dear land of Guyana.
The pressing need for collaboration is as obvious as the meaning of this ‘big word’ which is derived from the Latin ‘laborare’ meaning ‘to work’ and ‘co’ meaning to cooperate; therefore, it is only by working together would we be able to develop and prosper as Guyanese. Our leaders are therefore challenged to change their tune and song lest we all suffer the blindness and backwardness that the world’s role models cautioned us about and as our own Guyanese saying goes: “we will lose both cutlass and iguana”!
